Edible Cell

I love any way that teachers can get away from lectures and paper/pencile tests. My son's teacher is having each student make edible plant or animal cells. What a great way to learn about plant cells and have fun. I know my son will always remember the parts of a plant cell because of this project.

v The Red Twizzlers represents the endoplasmic reticulum. The endoplasmic reticulum is responsible for the production of the protein and lipid components of most of the cell's organelles.

v The Yellow Laffy taffy represents the Golgi body. The Golgi is often considered the distribution and shipping department for the cell's chemical products. It prepares proteins for export outside of the cell or for transport to other locations in the cell.

v The blue cotton candy represents the vacuole. The vacuole is a large storage facility that stores food and water.

v The green icing represents the cytoplasm. The cytoplasm is a jelly like substance that all of the cells organelles are located in.

v The blue icing represents the cell membrane. The cell membrane controls all that flows in and out of the cell.

v The red gushers represent the chloroplast. Chloroplast are were the plant cells chlorophyll is stored. This is what the plant uses to make into its own food. It combines sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to produce sugars. It also gives the plant its color.

v The hot tamales represent the mitochondrion. The mitochondria are located in the cytoplasm. The mitochondria are the power house of the cell.

v The pink nerds represent the Ribosome. Ribosomes create protein.

v The pink icing represents the nucleus. The nucleus controls all of the cell activities.
